Sometimes, the best value in racing comes from flying under the radar. Self Charging was bought privately for just 1,000gns at the Tattersalls July Sale, after failing to receive a bid in the ring. But after careful due diligence and two weeks under the eye of Jack Jones in Newmarket, we’re delighted to now offer shares in a filly we believe has a lot more ability than the market gave her credit for.

🔍 Why No One Bought Her – And Why That’s a Mistake

At big sales like Tattersalls July, with over 900 horses catalogued, foreign buyers and agents often have to cut horses off their shortlists without watching every replay. When a filly like Self Charging turns up with form figures like 7/8 and 9/17, it's easy to see why she might get overlooked.

But that surface read doesn’t tell the full story. In fact, her debut run tells you everything you need to know:

🧩 Form Behind the Numbers

• Ran in a competitive sales race on debut and achieved an RPR of 65

• Finished 7th of 28 behind horses now rated:

  • 1st: 101

  • 2nd: 99

  • 3rd: 83

  • 4th: 95

Just 4 days later, she ran again over a trip shorter than ideal, posting an RPR of 60, and was given a quiet ride by Ross Coakley, who later confirmed she felt like she had plenty of ability, but wasn’t ready to back up so quickly.

We now know she’s sound, she’s training well, and she’s shown real promise in a hot piece of form. Here’s the strategy:

• Run her for a 3rd time soon to obtain a handicap mark

• Step her back up in trip

• Target soft ground (suiting her pedigree)

• Try to land a few races on the bounce off a low mark before year’s end

• If all goes to plan, we believe she has the potential to be rated 80+ in time
